On October 9th, 2025, I’m releasing a new album of original material called Modern Life. Featuring songs written in the period after the release of my first solo record, following the death of my brother, and during writing for King of Air and Funky Dracula, Modern Life is a collection of what feels like my most emotionally direct and introspective songs since the early days of No Show Ponies.
With stark, minimalist production (vocals, acoustic guitar, piano, synthesizer), many of these tracks were deemed too slow, too honest, and too personal for release on my previous records, some of which used character, irony, and emotional distance to get at the truth of things. Hearing these songs in their new configuration, they seem to hint at a larger truth.
Recorded on November 3rd, 2024, on what would be my final session at The Shire (the recording studio in Austin where Jeff and I did much of our best work), this collection is a continuation of my process of using songs to document and describe what it feels like to be alive in the modern moment. Spoiler alert: it’s hard!
The songs on Modern Life ask a lot of questions about life. I hope that, in listening, you feel less alone in your own search for answers.
With love,
BB
